How to List Skills on a Resume (With Examples)

The skills section is often the most rushed part of a resume — a quick list of words dropped near the bottom of the page. But it is also one of the most frequently scanned sections, both by human recruiters doing a fast skim and by ATS keyword matching. A well-organized skills section takes only a few extra minutes and meaningfully improves both.
Separate skill types
Lumping "Python," "teamwork," and "Microsoft Excel" into one undifferentiated list makes it harder to quickly assess your technical depth. Group skills into clear categories so a recruiter scanning for a specific capability can find it immediately.

Languages
Spanish (fluent), French (conversational)
Be specific, not generic
Soft skills like "communication" carry little weight as bare words — virtually every resume includes them, and none are verifiable from a list. A genuine strength is far more convincing demonstrated through an achievement bullet than declared in the skills section.
Avoid
- Listing "leadership" or "communication" as bare words
- Star ratings, progress bars, or percentage circles next to skills

- Proving soft skills through an achievement bullet elsewhere
- A plain text list an ATS can reliably parse
Match proficiency to reality
Listing a skill implies you can be asked about it in an interview or expected to use it on day one. Used a tool once in a course versus daily for three years — those are different claims, worth being honest about, whether through explicit labels ("Working knowledge of SQL") or by reserving the list for skills you are confident discussing under questioning.
Order matters
Put the skills most relevant to the job first within each category, not in the order you happen to think of them. A recruiter scanning quickly registers the first few items far more than the last few, so leading with your strongest, most relevant skills gets more value from the same content.
